Updating Your Staircase

I love sharing the BEFORE and AFTER photos of homes that I sell!

I had a beautiful listing in Magee Ranch last year but the hardwood floors were the dated yellow maple.  The buyers have installed new hardwood and stained the railing dark to match the hardwood.  Look at the difference it makes.  This is not a cheap update but the finished look is well worth the money and definitely adds value to your home.  There are so many options with wood.

The look BEFORE was very nice:

However ~ Look at the AFTER:

This staircase was originally the yellow oak ~ everything was light oak so we stained the floors dark, painted the spindles and risers white and then stained the top railing and end spindles dark to match the floors.  Oak floors are much easier to stain than maple.  What a difference and what an impact.

You will need to use two different subcontractors for the this transformation.  You need a good hardwood guy who knows how to strip and stain wood.  Then you will need a skilled painter to paint the spindles and strip and stain the top handrail.  The handrail is very labor intensive.  You can also paint the top handrail a dark color which will save you some money BUT the finished look is not as sharp.  Painted handrails can chip easily as well.
